ROMAN NUMERALS

The proper symbols in the proper order--that's all there is to writing Roman numerals, and that's all Adler reviews here. As demonstrated by Barton's toga-clad Roman, cards of different sizes (for tens, fives, and ones) are combined in early exercises, and the subtraction ""shortcut"" IV is explained in terms of a penny change for a nickel, larger numbers and their symbols (L, C, D, etc.) are listed, and there you are--all set to decipher old copyright dates and the time on a grandfather clock. Where the need exists this will fill it.
