FAMOUS BRIDGES OF THE WORLD

A bridge-builder himself, Mr. Steinman tells about the history and famous products of his exacting craft with the functional simplicity that characterizes good writing. In his quite complete survey, he starts with introductory information about natural arch bridges and primitive suspensions. Roman bridges come next and there are grand descriptions of France's famous Pont du Gard and the bridge at Avignon that help give firm historical understanding for the development of types- truss, cantilever, suspension, arch- and their combinations that went into the building of such landmarks as the Firth of Forth, the Golden Gate and the George Washington Bridge.
