THE GREAT MONSTER HUNT: The Story of the Loch Ness Investigation

This first-person account of the Cookes' 1968 discoveries at Loch Ness, Scotland reports on the sightings of and theories about its legendary monster. Some of their interviews are recorded here verbatim--including one with a native of the area who has seen the creature eight separate times. Each sighter seems to have been able to lead the Cookes to still another witness of one or two humps or a head surfacing, and all agree that hoaxes, illusions, and misconceptions must be ruled out; there is just too much evidence, not the least of which are photos of the mysterious, probably amphibious thing-and four of them are reproduced here. The Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau is run by a converted skeptic, and even scientists are now cooperating to tap such research resources as sonar systems to determine the existence of a ""presence"" in the impenetrable waters. Peripheral tales of historic, magical and mystical experiences round out the study, which ends with the story of Mrs. Cooke's own sighting. Indulgently prosy at the outset and local-colorful thereafter, the casual journal is more than casually interesting--but alas the haunting secrets of Ness have yet to be un-Loched.
