Quoting a magazine which states ""Because ideas can lead to betrayal, the impulse toward orthodoxy in a period like ours becomes almost compulsive"", the author attacks American conformism in a series of heated, opinionated pieces. Nothing escapes him. Materialism, advertising, anti-intellectualism, mass communications, witch hunters, even the gossip columnists come under his fire. Although much of this is expressed in a kind of overwrought, ambiguous style, the final meaning is devastatingly clear. What emerges is a disturbing impression that Americans have lost their respect for personal heroism, courage and honesty which have so long been the moral strength of the nation. Another book is added to the list of those intolerant of the present scene.
