The survival of the quickest in the hot-under-foot experiences of Mike Finney, hibernating in Mexico with a Federal record as a leftist agitator. He takes the identity of Philip Tremaine and returns to San Francisco, to find he has stepped into the shoes of a killer, and that Tremaine's mother and sister Catherine want him cleared- or convicted. Hunted by the police, by the Tremaines, he is lost in a crisscross of identities, a doublecross of motives, until he clears Tremaine's name, only to find himself hung with a double murder charge. But when he finds the real Tremaine, kills him and buries him with Finney's papers, he is able to get off to a fresh start...A first in the field which, though highly complicated, is competent and provides some expert entertainment.
