Antipasto--with all kinds of interesting components from the paranormal to the penumbral--these short stories have been collected from earlier appearances in Playboy, the S.E.P., Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazines, and elsewhere. Many of them take place just beyond, flirting with the day after tomorrow. ""The Sailing Club"" for tired businessmen is another kind of Tour (his last novel) while in ""The Academy""--a military institution you learn for life; then there's the encroachment of a totally absorbing ""Interview"" prior to a company promotion. A new family in a small town, keeping its baby from view, is driven away by overhelpful ""Neighbors""; the title story deals with the time after a nuclear accident when all of England has ""vaporized""; ""Dolly Madison in Peru"" projects an avidly compulsive hostess collecting peoples of all kinds; etc. etc. Most of the stories are full of calculated surprise, not the least of which is the horror of ""One Sunday After Church."". . . All in all, diversified diversions which are uniformly successful.
