THE MAN WITH THE BATON

Good reading -- and it fills a real need -- this history of the symphony orchestra and its conductors. Descriptive and anecdotal, with clear cut discussion of principles of interpretation, and critical commentaries on conductors from the beginning to the present. There is a biographical guide, an excellent bibliography, an index, making this a valuable reference book for library and school shelves. Tie up with Viking's book on Toscanini, to be published on the 20th. One should create a plus sale for the other.
