David Grew tells a good yarn, but tells it so badly that one stumbles over his style to get at his tale. McKay brought him back into the market with reissue of earlier books, Beyond Rope and Fence and Whitepaw Goes North. Again his story is of Canadian wilds and badlands setting. Again it is a chase after a wild horse- and the close friendship that develops between boy and horse. Plenty of action, a grand pace in the story of the chase, bits about paleontology (rather dragged in, I felt), and a good deal about the friendship of two boys that split over temperamental differences and almost ended in disaster. Just enough romance for girl readers, too.
