A five-month sojourn of the California Huntingtons in Tahiti changed their name to Houtini and brought new life-ways into view. Settling in the Guild house after an encouraging welcome from whites and natives alike, the Huntingtons inherited devoted servants, whose attachment was returned, as well as a tradition of hospitality that was staggering. The problems of daily life -- getting groceries and, oh dear, ice; the ways of the Vahine and the white man; the activities of bird-attracting and spearfishing and Charlestoning to a hula partner's gyrations are part of the fun. There is also brought to the land, the modernities of Papeete, the beliefs and temperament of the natives; and glossaries give Tahitian terms and recipes.
