From Colonial days to the Brooklyn Dodgers,- history, biography, essays, verse, fiction- Brooklyn is here presented in many facets. Henry Stiles' revealing history threads its way through the early sections, interspersed with bits of descriptive writing, travel notes, stories of characters and landmarks of the old town. Contemporary source material, newspaper files, and reminiscences have proved rewarding. In comparatively recent times the society items of the Brooklyn Blue Book, the essays of Charles Hanson Towne, of Edmund Wilson, of Christopher Morley; extracts from Dreiser, Ernest Poole, Henry Miller, Betty Smith, enliven the canvas. Personalities- Crime- Civic Monuments-Politics, name the field and it is here. Brooklyn has a staunch claque. This may get a boosting from them, but it is good reading- if specialized in background- in any case.
