An able realignment of psychiatric theory and practice is non-schismatic, definite, and plainspoken and relates all concepts of behavior- normal and abnormal- to the ego: normalcy depends on effective ego functioning, so that one's identity is well established, judgment is exercised in relation to reality, and forceful activity is maintained. Telltale ego reactions may be anxiety, emptiness, hostility or depression, and psychopathology is surveyed in terms of the various types of defective egos (i.e. character neuroses, symptom neuroses, etc. on to more psychotic patterns). Dr. Glasser while indicating the various types of treatment possible- from drug therapy to analysis contends that psychiatry is most valuable not in giving insights into the past, but in developing ego strength now. Since medical and clinical facilities are limited for the increasing number of disturbed people, he stresses a broader application of methods which encourage the strengthening of the ego at home (by parents) and in the community. His book should have a broad based appeal for case workers, teachers, etc. as it systematizes psychiatric thinking and makes it easily accessible.
