A novel- without a narrative- which presents a sequence of profiles of the passengers on a large plane Africa bound, and which- in its registry of backgrounds, personalities, points of view, forms a composite, contemporary world in brief. There is the wife, returning to her husband and children; the Pole working with the displaced people of his country; the native preacher and the Abyssinian nobleman; the young Englishman with a Christian-colonial sense of mission; a Frenchman, an Italian, a Jew, etc. and these and others provide a cosmopolitan precis of caste and color prejudices, national idiosyncrasies, individual inclinations and beliefs, in a sharp and ordered succession... A tempered, literate performance- of doubtful appeal.
