ALLIGATORS ARE AWFUL

They sit in front of you at movies and never take off their hats; they always push to be first on the bus; they look over your shoulder when you are reading and don't let you turn the page until they have read it: McPhail attributes these and a few other annoying habits (ten in all) to alligators, and that's all there is to the joke. In literal pictures that do nothing to extend the image, McPhail shows clothed alligators committing all the listed outrages; and in each he casts a little girl in a dress as the aggrieved complainer. ""I'm certainly glad that people aren't like those awful alligators,"" says the little girl in a closing rib nudge. Our alligator didn't think it was a bit funny.
