Great Cat, the biggest cat that ever lived and several times bigger than Toby, appears one night at Toby's doorstep--and Toby, who ""had always wanted a kitten,"" takes her in and buys a cow to provide her with milk. When the neighbors, fearing for their children, say that Great Cat must go, Toby takes the cat and the cow to live on an island. One day on the island they see a small boat tossing in a storm. Great Cat swims out and pulls the boat to shore, thus saving a group of children from a nearby camp. McPhail colors this gentle giant white, with patient yellow eyes that might express as much as you want them to--and so, no doubt, might the story. The illustrations are soft, misty, and irridiscent, setting the audience up for the hushed response the soft and misty story aims for.
