Swell job both of selection of variety of material and top drawer quality, livelier, more human than the Esquire collection (P. 155). The first of a proposed annual anthology -- and off to a good start. Al Laney wrote the best of the lot -- the poignant story of Sam Langford, Boston Tar Baby, found blind and old in Harlem. Grand stories for fight fans -- the Dempsey-Firpo one makes you feel you are seeing that thriller over again; track fans will delight in the Charley Paddock story, The Fastest Human; tennis, golf, horse racing, baseball, football, hockey, softball (in the Philippines), skiing, fishing -- name your sport and there it is. Biographical notes on the contributors -- sports writers known locally rather than nationally, but doing big time stuff in their fields, and some big names as well.
