MISSION TO MANKIND

The real purpose of this book,"" says Father McGuire, ""is to acquaint you with some of my friends"". He is Executive Secretary of the Mission Secretariat in Washington, and his friends are Catholic missionaries, as he himself was for many years. This collection of true articles covers most parts of the globe and a fabulous array of zealous activity; unfortunately, however, the quality of the writing is equally various, ranging from frenzied patchworks of embarrassing cliches to spare, evocative understatement. But priests, nuns and lay workers laboring courageously and unceasingly to improve the economic, social, and intellectual--along with the spiritual--environments of Peruvian Indians, Chinese lepers, and New York City narcotics addicts do make for interesting as well as inspiring reading.
