VALIANT FOR THE TRUTH

Gresham Machen is a span of more than 1800 years of history, and along the way we pass such ecclesiastical stalwarts as Athanasius, Ambrose, Chrysostom, Augustine, Anselm, Wycliffe, uss, a'Kempis, Savonarola, Luther, Zwingli, Cranmer, Knox, Calvin, Baxter, Bunyan, Edwards, Tennent, Wesley, Whitefield, Brainerd, Asbury, Carey, McCheyne, Ryle, Hitchcock, Maclaren, Talmage, Spurgeon, Moody and Haldeman. Each is introduced by a biographical sketch, and is represented by a generous selection from his writing which gives the ""flavor"" and power of the man in surprising degree. All had ""God-given convictions so firmly rooted in their hearts by God's Grace that neither persecution, banishment, torture, nor death could dislodge or destroy them"". But why this particular choice of the valiant? Mr. David Fuller, the author and editor tells us: for each of these men, their absolute authority was the Bible. They held verbal inspiration essential. To them it was as much a test of Christian fellowship as any other fundamental of their faith the virgin birth, the sinless life of Christ, his substitutionary death, his bodily resurrection. These truths, absolute in their nature, formed a golden chain forged by the Holy Spirit. If one link was missing, the whole would be in jeopardy. Therefore, fundamentalists and conservative traditionalists will find much to corroborate their convictions in this volume. Others are more likely to regard it with historical, antiquarian interest, a series of landmarks which describes the way we have come rather than the way we are going.
