One of the notable social scientists of our culture today provides a stiff intellectual stimulant in the form of a brilliant study of an earlier critic of the American scene, economic and educational. Differing from the other Twentieth Century Library books in length and approach, this is a study interweaving the personal and professional aspects of Veblen so that we see the eccentric college teacher of Norwegian background and the writer of The Higher Learning and The Theory of the Leisure Class whole, and we find an evalution of the work based on the man. Tight reading, this will draw an audience with perhaps more background on the subject, than the more expository evaluations of the earlier books in a hearteningly solid series.
