KIRKUS REVIEW

An essential book for those interested in antique silver, particularly since so much of the works of this 18th century silversmith and her sons and daughter-in-law have found their way to U.S. museums and private collections. The introductory material is the biography of a remarkable woman, who, when widowed, took over her husband's smithy and built it into a great business, which was held by three generations of the Bateman family. The author is himself well known in the area of which he writes. His increasing interest in Bateman silver has led to this authoritative work, with 87 plates, carefully captioned, which will be the basic sourcebook on the subject.
