This is a first rate story, but it is based on a highly controversial assumption of disputed fact -- the 15th century mystery of the princes in the Tower of London. Mr. Daniell accepts the story of a daring and dramatic deception, the story of the pretender (or was he an imposter?) and tells his story in a convincing and well-rounded novel which sustains a skillful balance between history and romance. A craftsman's son, while a young boy, was taken by the priest, Richard Symonds, and groomed to impersonate one of the ""little princes"", young Edward, who had been imprisoned by his uncle. The boy is carefully trained, schooled to play his role, until he went down to defeat in battle. A daring and dramatic deception, rarely mentioned in history.
