A descriptive record of the great educational and philanthropic foundations, how they were established, what they have done, and what they are doing. The Freedmen's Bureau, the Peabody Fund, the General Education Boards, and the Rockefeller and Carnegie Foundations (the latter in greater detail) are analyzed in terms of their funds, appropriations, policies, personnel, and accomplishments, pointing to the conclusion that education has been the chief beneficiary, and that the use of funds is most effective when ideas precede gifts, ideas rather than projects.... Of special interest, chiefly to philanthropic organizations and university administrators.
