In his debut, business consultant Winkelman offers advice on accepting and implementing change—both personally and professionally.

In Winkelman’s strategy for successful adaptation, he emphasizes the power of images, encouraging individuals to use maps, models, and “dream or vision boards” to imagine a positive outcome. The book uses full-color whimsical illustrations and photographs; as a result, it’s perhaps targeted to junior or midlevel employees but appropriate for anyone seeking a lighthearted road map to change. Winkelman personalizes the book by revealing his own struggles: “I came to understand how the processes known as ‘emotional hijacking’ was affecting my thinking and behavior. The entire pattern had been operating as a blind spot in me for years.” The author goes beyond self-reflection, however, delving into how others can evolve via an exploration of “Five GameChangers”: Clarity, Connection, Conditions, Motivation, and Action. Winkelman devotes a chapter to each, ably integrating explanatory, conversational text with stories, examples, and exercises. One tip the author recommends, for instance, is to read “great stories about change,” several of which he includes, as a way to understand all types of transformations. The book encourages active participation; in the chapter on Clarity, for example, an exercise begins, “List at least three specific ways you can measure your progress in implementing your desired change.” Here the author demonstrates how “perception triggers belief, which stimulates behavior, which leads to results.” Winkelman pulls together the content in a concluding summary chapter that offers up a motivational “challenge journal” for tracking positive moments.

Visually appealing and engaging; may reduce the angst associated with embracing change.
