COLORADO CONQUEST

By

Publisher: Dodd, Mead

A vigorous, dramatic story, done full justice here, this story of the conquest of the Red Bull, the Colorado River which for centuries beat back all who tried to master it. From the days of the conquistadores, to the visionary pioneers, Wozencroft, who first saw the promise of the river and the desert; Rockwood, whose lifetime was spent in attempting to control the waters, irrigate the desert and make settlement possible. The first settlers, boom and panic when the soil in found to be too alkaline for agriculture, resettlement, then dark years of drought, carthquake, flood, as the river runs amok. Finally, Boulder Dam, and the subjugation of the waters. Fictionized incidents in the stories of the typical settlers help personalize the material, which despite a good bit of engineering, colorful and stirring reading. A book for the region, for the west coast and for any men with an interest in the subject. Good reading.
