Christine Drummond has for some years been not only the companion but also the chattel of rich Miss Lesley Patterson in New York state: so has Gordon, also a home town boy, whom she has made her chauffeur and is a somewhat surlier semidependent in her little empire. Given an opening, Christine runs away- for the third time- and in Paris makes a fluttering attempt to free herself- from Miss Lesley and from the memory of Cousin John, whom she had loved. Gordon follows her, goads her, and reveals the full extent of Miss Lesley's possessive protection; so does John- to expose his own weakness; and so does Miss Lesley who is invalided by a stroke into a more real dependence- but Gordon, however, still offers her the motive and incentive to escape.... Miss Powell, whose wicked eye and ear and tongue have given a characteristic cachet to her earlier novels, is in a far softer mood; if she is less effective, she has managed a pleasant entertainment for women.
