A posthumous book from a gifted illustrator re-creates the enthusiasm of children a generation or two ago for the American West. Khalsa tells of listening to The Lone Ranger and of pretending to be a cowboy while riding a merry-go-round or a horse that she built on the banister; of looking at the horse paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art or hoping that she might win a horse in a raffle. Finally, she quotes and illustrates four favorite cowboy songs. The power of Khalsa's jewel-bright art is undiminished here as she lovingly portrays early 1950's Brooklyn and her imaginative excursions into the landscape evoked by the songs. More than just a nostalgic trip, the book suggests how a child in any era can be nourished by a particular dream.
