This salt-water taffy does a disservice to the cause of the California sea lion--unfortunate, since the decimation of the species by commercial fisheries and other interests is of serious concern to conservationists. Heroine of this drivelling effort is Valla, the female sea lion, who, in the midst of harrowing escapes from man and beast, is caught by ""the Scientist"" (a pale shadow of Mark Trail), used in underwater sonar tests, gets away, has one brief dark-eyed exchange with her former keeper, returns to sea and island to bear her young.
