TITTERS: The First Collection of Humor by Women

Funny ladies like Anne Meara, Peg Bracken, and Phyllis Diller have their followings so we're reluctant to consign this to boobs (ha ha). . . which is the tenor of much of the material. Intended to refute the argument that women have no sense of humor, it is an uneven compilation of spoofs, cartoons, transplanted night club bits--something for everyone, although readers of Mad or The Lampoon will be most appreciative. Some of the take-offs, especially of written works, are obvious but relatively effective: ""The Total Slave"" by Marabel Moron, cover come-ons from Fake Confessions magazine, parodies of Nora Ephron, Lillian Hellman, Anne Sexton. Others are just obvious: an article on ""The Myth of the Male Orgasm,"" a lesbian dating guide, lethal recipes from the Sylvia Plath Cookbook. An inauspicious title overextended into the section headings (""Jugs,"" ""Knockers,"" etc.), a sophomoric tone, and some serious omissions--most notably Lily Tomlin.
