by Debi Gliori ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 14, 2007
Hell and Scotland both freeze over for the sixth (and, possibly, final) entry in this pure dead delightful series. This time the tumultuous Strega-Borgia clan faces three thoroughly evil adversaries from previous outings, including the demon Isagoth—hot to make up for his previous failure to secure the outrageously important Chronostone—and His S’tainless S’teeliness, mighty S’tan himself, popular television chef and First Minister of the Hadean Executive. Along with an array of mythological and magical allies, the Strega-Borgias become even more extended than usual for the climactic face-off with the arrival of a baby brother—snatched by Isagoth, who gets a thorough and hilarious tutorial in just how many body fluids a newborn emits—for siblings Titus, Pandora and little Damp. Once again, Gliori chucks in loads of slimes, stinks, cliffhangers and satiric tweaks, all delivered with split-second comic timing. Though she also tries to fill in the background, so tangled have the ongoing plot threads become that readers would be best advised just to start at the beginning. Despite being billed as the finish, there are enough of those threads left dangling to keep on—and that wouldn’t be a bad thing. (Fantasy. 11-13)

Four fifth-graders are recruited by a scheming magician in this hefty bonbon from the author of the Fablehaven tales. At first, Nate, Summer, Trevor and Pigeon think they have it good. Having asked them to help her recover a hidden treasure that (she says) belongs to her, Belinda White, friendly proprietor of a sweets shop that has just opened in their small town, provides some uncommon candies—like Moon Rocks, that give them the ability to jump like grasshoppers, and literally electrifying Shock Bits. When she begins asking them to commit certain burglaries, though, their exhilaration turns to unease, and rightly so; Mrs. White is actually after a draft from the Fountain of Youth that will make her the world’s most powerful magician. And, as it turns out, she isn’t the only magician who’s come to town—not even the only one whose magic is tied to sweets. Filling out the supporting cast with the requisite trio of bullies, plus magical minions of various (and sometimes gross) abilities, Mull trots his twist-laden plot forward to a well set-up climax. Leaving the door open an inch for sequels, he dishes up a crowd-pleaser as delicious—if not so weird—as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . (Fantasy. 10-13)
