KIRKUS REVIEW

In direct, clear prose, eight-year-old Jeannie (the author's surrogate) tells how--after Daddy is drafted in 1943--she lives alone with Mama in their Philadelphia house, staying with a neighbor after school until Mama gets home from her Navy yard job, standing in line for rationed food, planting a victory garden, waiting for treasured letters. In soft, moving full-page drawings, Ray captures the loneliness and fear of the stay-at-homes, the joy at good news, and the warm embrace when Daddy comes home, as well as the 40's milieu with its streetcars and row houses. A poignant recreation of a memorable time.
