Lushly pure romance in Deeping's own manner, applied to a pattern of story quite different from its predecessors. An automobile accident thrusts a split personality upon an English engineer, and he finds himself identified with cowardly Pellias, a Fifth Century inhabitant of Roman England, who runs away from invading Saxons. He throws himself into the Roman way of life -- he conceals his knowledge that the Romans will be defeated and continues the tactics against the Saxons. Eventually, as the Saxons are temporarily routed, he goes down, defending his love -- and wakes up in England 1939. Paralleling of periods and conditions.
