BUYING AND RENOVATING A HOUSE IN THE CITY

Mesdames Stanforth and Stamm have both renovated houses (Mrs. Stamm is now a ""professional consultant"" in the field) and offer sanguine encouragement to do likewise and certainly the initial tours of cities and redone-over neighborhoods, plus the illustrations, will be an incentive. They're a little sketchy about those problems (if you don't like the neighborhood school, you'll be saving enough on rent and commuting charges to afford a private one?) -- then get down to the basics in basic terms: the kind of house you want; estimating costs and financing; gas; plumbing; wiring; etc. along with the use of a broker, or architect, and some of the essentials re taxes and the building code. Among their nine caveats ""lack of skilled workmen and sloppy workmanship"" may be the most significant one for the '70's rather than the '60's on which much of this is based. And if for the most part actual figures don't figure, some of the peripheral information on say woodstripping or painting should save you more than ten dollars.
