Pub Date: April 1st, 1964

After defining the two general types of ocean islands --continental and oceanic --, Miss Goetz describes the various processes by which islands are formed. The detailed accounts in this section are clear; each method is followed through from first to last step, making it possible for the reader to comprehend the actual physical progress. The author discusses distinctive plant and animal life --how various species sprang up and became indigenous to the one particular isle or island group. Moving up the scale, she ends a well organized, informative study with a brief look at island dwellers, pointing out the effects of an isolated existence on man's patterns of thought. Worthwhile, exciting non-fiction.
