An interesting picture of the places, times, people and customs, in a simple tale of two children -- Alcmene, who at ten, through her liberal Greek parents, is far more of a person that Delarah, twelve, whose beauty is the only concern of her Turkish family. Delarah's father, in spite of governmental orders concerning formal, European education, permits his daughter to study with Alcmene, and, when political uprisings force him to escape, it is to Alcmene's family that he entrusts his daughter. Turkish rule in 1907, and scenes of family, harem, civic and governmental life provide an unhackneyed background for this story.
