YOU AND YOUR RETRIEVER

By

Publisher: Doubleday

The basis here is the training of a working dog, for hunting primarily but also for Field Trials and Tests, and the instructions are preceded by a short history of the retriever, the breeds and backgrounds. There are suggestions for choosing and buying, housing and feeding a new puppy, and then, from the first steps in training him for obedience (including experiences in cars and boats, on docks), come the procedures for marked retrieves, blind -- and triple -- retrieves and, finally, advice on hunting with the dog. All guidance is definite, firm, and from a practical approach so that beginning as well as advanced nimrods will find help and counsel. Appendix material deals with breed standards, lists of field champions, AKC field trial rules, clubs holding field trials and a glossary of their terms, and where quality equipment can be found. (This is more compact than James Lam Free's Training Your Retriever (to be reissued by Coward-McCann January 31, $5.95) which, since 1949 has won a large public by its personal, sometimes unorthodox, methods of training.)
