KIRKUS REVIEW

The orientation is almost entirely English with brief mentions of the impact of Hearst and Pulitzer on newspaper practice. The first section of the book is a good short survey of the circulation of printed news with most of the concentration on the 17th and 18th century English pioneers. There is no adequate discussion of the growth of chain newspapers and the chapters vary between the historic and the how-to, between the founders and what goes into a newspaper. The specific references to newspapers are to English Fleet Street giants and the provincial press. The select book list is entered by British publisher and few of the titles have been re-printed in America.
