Wrapping up the limp trilogy of The Dark Tide (p. 430) and Shadows of Doom (p. 505). The various good-guy armies converge on the Iron Tower, where the evil Modru is planning to summon up his supremely wicked boss, Gyphon, during an eclipse, via the agency of the Myrkenstone. Since a frontal assault on the Tower would be fatal, the allies send in a small commando force led by Warrow Tuck. Meanwhile, King Galen's imprisoned beloved, Laurelin, plans to escape but, as she makes her exit, she runs into a wounded Tuck, entering; both are captured and taken to the Tower. . . where Tuck saves the world just as Gyphon makes his big entrance. Less slavishly Tolkienesque than Vols. I and II (notwithstanding the pretentious appendices), but otherwise the shabby formula--long dull speeches, endless clichÉs, juvenile doings--as before: for devotees only.
