MOTHER NIGHT

As four different animals tuck their children in--Father Bear with a story, Mother Mouse with a song, Mother Raven with a kiss, and Mother Fox whispering ""Sweet dreams""--""Mother Night is here to hush the earth; to shake her dark quilt and let dreams tumble down."" The bedrooms are cozy, the lovely landscape at peace under a starry sky; yet the surreal, truly dreamlike dreams pictured for the little animals are strange, busy, not comforting, perhaps, but not frightening either. Dawn comes, bringing the glowing light of a new day and a loving parent to wake each sleeper. A quiet, perceptive, beautifully designed book with an unusually subtle understanding of the child's world of dreams.
