More readable than one might expect from what sounds like a twice told tale. For the author has cleverly driven a straight line through the vast welter of material and by keeping always to the point of view of American domestic and foreign policy political machinery and public opinion, he has given old material a new perspective and made the facts stand out in an illuminating light. He follows the progress from the Kellogg Pact through Pearl Harbor; how incredibly we clung to our illusion of isolationism. He describes the crablike progress towards a realistic view of our responsibility, pointing out along the way, with no hesitation, the mistakes we have made and the lessons we should have learned. Well written, in clear, concise style.
