Well known for their documentaries and books on African wildlife for adults, the Jouberts here offer younger readers examples from their years of experience studying, filming and photographing lions in Botswana. Opening with a description of a face-to-face encounter with a charging male lion, they go on to explain where lions live, their family structure and their place in their world as hunters. Sidebars add information about looking for and living with lions, and the authors wrap up with observations about the species’ future. As is customary in the series, the book concludes with a page of suggestions for reader actions and further study, facts at a glance and research and photographic notes. The topic is sure to appeal to young animal lovers who will ignore the repetition in early pages to admire these fabulous beasts close-up and in action in the Jouberts’ own striking color photographs.
