SOMEWHERE A CAT IS WAITING

A meandering and rather flowery tribute to the cats Derek and Jeannie Tangye have been owned by, beginning with wartime acquisition Monty (named for the Field Marshal) who first overcame Derek's inveterate disapproval of the feline race. Monty, an affable ginger, had no trouble making the transition from city to country cat--tranquil friend of gulls and chaffinches--when the Tangyes decided to pull up London stakes and embark on a flower-raising business in Cornwall. After Monty came Lama, a small, resolute black intruder, who held sway until a lookalike competitor--they turned out to be probable siblings--introduced himself and a tiny ginger Monty-double into the picture. The charm of their stories is unfortunately compromised by a lot of coyly anthropomorphic enthusiasm and condescending prattle about escaping the madding crowd's ignoble union demands, inflation, and abandonment of standards. Nice animals, preachy humans.
