Thirteenth in the series, here is the annual collection of the best magazine and newspaper sports stories, the best photographs from 1956, and the listing of the champions of all sports, in that year. The three judges (John Chamberlain, Quentin Reynolds and Bob Considine) don't themselves agree, nor will the reader, for the personal equation is an ever-present factor. The rating is high, whether these are the usual stories of basketball, football, baseball, horse racing, track, fishing- or what have you. New sets of circumstances provide new approaches, and for the addict, sports writing never grows stale, pitchers don't pitch perfect world series games once in a million times, great athletes like Babe Didrikson don't die as gallantly as they lived, great pitchers don't pour their hearts out in defeat as did Dan Newcombe after losing a world series game. Story after story pulls at the heart strings, captures the imagination, brings laughter. The judges have picked well- but the readers will find their own favorites.
