THE LITTLE RED ENGINE GETS A NAME

Exceptional illustrations by Lewitt-Him for this distinguished picture-- story book (with more text than the usual book in that class -- hence its classification for reading aloud). For me the pictures had something of the quality of Bemelmans (In Madeleine) or some of Slobodkin's work. It is the story of an engine that lacked a name, and there's a happy ending when the English king gives it a name. The rhythmic pattern makes it fun to read aloud, and the pictures go along with the story so that four and five year olds can share it with the still younger members of the family.
