MAKE THE MOST OF A GOOD THING: YOU!

A very readable self-help book for teen-age and pre-teen girls. Shaw covers such subjects as menstruation, PMS, sexuality, sexual abuse, nutrition, exercise, weight control, anorexia and bulimia, stress management, peer pressure, and substance abuse. The presentation is lively and direct, the advice sensible, and the overall approach primarily body-and-mind oriented (as opposed to popularity and clothing). Shaw's message: a healthy mind in a healthy body helps to make a happy teen-ager (and ultimately, a happy adult). Also included are some how-to's on makeup and skin care. There are many excellent self-help books for teens on the market (Shaw includes a selected bibliography), but this work is particularly refreshing because Shaw succeeds in making abstinence and clean living seem desirable for teens. This is accomplished without moralizing, but with the awareness that teens are individuals, worthy of self-respect. A handy, basic guide.
