CHAMELEON THE SPY AND THE TERRIBLE TOASTER TRAP

While Massie wears out the Z on her typewriter, her sprightly chameleon spy (introduced in Chameleon Was a Spy, 1972) saves the town from a mysterious sleeping-and-robbery epidemic. Phone calls are answered by snores and everyone is asleep at the newspaper and the mayor's office, which have been cleaned out. Even the big brass letters spelling MAYOR are missing --but Chameleon notices the big brass RAYMO at the appliance shop of Ray and Moe, who are busy sprinkling sleeping powder into a lot of specially priced (25Ç) toasters. Despite near-capture, a whiff of the fumes, and an unscheduled ride on a pop-up toast slice, Chameleon manages to alert the police just in time. Meanwhile the toaster tricks, Chameleon's sportive color changes, the villains' capers, and all those dozzzzzing employees make for a lively entertainment.
