The lyrical rhymes of a talented poet (Truck Song, 1984) are combined with Minor's vast landscapes to evoke the California desert. The text marches in sturdy couplets, only escaping tedium by the aptness of Siebert's choices of words and images. The desert speaks: the reader is invited to ""walk the sweeping face of me"" as seasons, vistas, and weather are depicted. The role of the human is given a ghostly nod in a description of abandoned mining towns built ""To find the silver and the gold/That deep inside myself I hold."" Through it all, the desert lies changed and yet eternally impervious. Minor's paintings, like Siebert's verse, convey spaciousness and a sense of awe, wonders caught and wonders suggested. An impressive book.
