She arrives (on a magenta mound); they hug and kiss and float around a puddle on a leaf; and then she returns step by step across the twig, stone, leaf, and other stone and ""home just before dark."" Ehlert's flat, basic shapes in construction-paper colors and a cut-paper style pick up the story's deliberate rock-bottom simplicity and play up the ant's relative tininess. But the cute tone of that closing ""just before dark"" undercuts the effect, and certainly no elemental chords are struck in any case.
