QUARTERBACKS HAVE ALL THE FUN

An anthology of some of the best articles ever written on quarterbacks -- W.C. Heinz on Charlie Conerly, Gary Cartwright on Craig Morton, Dan Jenkins on Joe Namath, Wells Twombly on George Blanda, and a dozen more -- assembled by sportscaster and editor (Sports magazine) Schaap. If anything, the various pieces belie the title -- signal callers (even when their coaches call the plays) are the glamour boys of the game. However, they get knocked like a Clairol blonde, are often booed more than Roger Maris, and seem to be belittled no matter what the shortcomings of their offensive line. Apart from a few night-lifing celebrities (the flamboyant Layne, the caroming Jurgensen, the nocturnal Namath) most of the others resemble unflashy hard-workers such as Starr, Unitas or Kilmer. Studying game films, discussing pass patterns and picking apart defenses are what it's all about -- don't let Sunday afternoon heroics throw you. A well-executed play.
