'I want a hamburger,' said Tom, 'with onions and ketchup and pickles on a poppy-seed roll.'"" ""'Someday our son will turn into one great big hamburger,' "" worries Mother and, sure enough, Tom has the last laugh when he plants a giant hamburger with floppy handkerchief ears in his bed. This mischief, plus a flimsier ploy of scaring Mother Rabbit with an inflated dinosaur ""pet,"" establish Tom as an identical twin of wispy Hattie Rabbit (1976). The formula is so familiar that even beginners could recite it without a hitch, but Tom's private victories over his protective Mother are a sympathetic blend of toddlerish revenge and affection.
