PICTORIAL GUIDE TO THE MOON by Dinsmore Alter

PICTORIAL GUIDE TO THE MOON

By

Publisher: Crowell

Dr. Alter is one of the joint authors of Pictorial Astronomy (a well known work which is going into its second edition and is announced for March 15th). This new pictorial guide is crammed with a surprising amount of detail--surprising because its readability is maintained under the welter of facts. Telescopic studies of the moon have provided astronomers with a great deal of information about lunar geography, which is reported here in separate sections that cover plains, mountains, craters and eas. Man-in-space explorers on the moon will be deprived of the privilege of naming the most outstanding geographic features, for these are many and the names are established telescopic check points. (Hints on telescopic photography abound in the text.) There are separate chapters on the four phases of the moon, on the moon and tides, and an especially good report on lunar rays. The book opens with a history of lunar observation that can double as an annotated bibliography of the important works printed since observations began. All the many plates will be numbered to correlate with information given in the text.
