THE AGE OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Pub Date: July 13th, 1948

A panorama, with emphasis on the economic and political, of the United States from 1929 to 1941 -- with special focus on the New Deal. General Wall Street background as the depression is reviewed; Hoover's negative, if misunderstood, attempts to stem the tide, and then the arrival on the scene of Roosevelt, with his buoyant optimism, his determination to try anything. The author analyzes various aspects of the Roosevelt administration:- the alphabet agencies, the transference of power from Wall Street to Capitol Hill; the city, county, state planning boards; the rise of unionism; help for the farmer, housing for the poor, opportunity for youth, security for the aged, but the general failure to wipe out unemployment without the aid of the war boom. Most effectively presented are the moods and feelings of the people in the changing times, lethargy and despair, hope and aspiration. A judicious, objective appraisal, by the author of Hero in America.
